Abstract

A survey is given of the swelling behaviour of AISI 316 steel
due to neutron irradiation. It Is shown that the cold-worked material
swells less than the solution-treated material. Irradiation of this steel
as cladding leads to much higher swelling than material irradiations,
especially at temperatures above 500 ° C, The possible explanations for this
phenomenon, i.e. composition, precipitation and state of stress, are discussed. Other materials with promisinq swelling properties are briefly reviewed.
