This paper summarizes recent experimental results investigating the effects of radiation on the anaerobic corrosion of carbon steel exposed to the cementitious buffer environment inside the Supercontainer. Anaerobic corrosion rates of carbon steel were measured by monitoring hydrogen evolution using manometric gas cells. The test medium was simulated alkaline pore solution (pH ~13.4). Experiments were performed at temperatures of 25 and 80°C, chloride concentrations of 0 and 100 mg/Land at gamma dose rates of 0 and 25 Gy/h. A dose rate of 25 Gy.h had a negligible effect on the gas generation rates.
