    Abstract

Intelligent systems including fuzzy logic, neural networks, evolutionary omputation, data mining and optimisation etc. are complementary to each other and allow solutions of new problems on the way to manifest features that are usually assumed to be signs of intelligent behaviours. Knowledge engineering can be regarded as a mixture composed by such as artificial intelligence, computing, psychology, and many other fields. It encompasses information systems based on knowledge processing. In this synergistic combination, each of them plays an important, well-defined, and unique role. This special issue is generated from the 2006 International Conference on Intelligent Systems and Knowledge Engineering (ISKE2006, April 6–7, 2006, Shanghai, China) covering the-state-of-the-art research and development in all aspects related to intelligent systems for knowledge engineering. About 200 researchers, professors, and students from 12 countries and regions participated in ISKE2006 and communicated through a total of 16 regular sessions, 3 keynote lectures and 2 featured lectures. Five papers selected from over 110 papers of ISKE2006 and one invited paper were strictly reviewed for this special issue, which present recently development of methodologies, techniques and applications in intelligent knowledge engineering systems from multiple aspects.
