We have prepared new luminescent liquid-crystalline neodymium(III) β-diketonate complexes. The architecture of these lanthanidomesogens is unique in the sense that a single mesogenic ligand, connected directly to the metal centre, induces mesomorphism, despite the very bulky lateral lanthanide tris(β-diketonate) group. We attribute this to the highly anisotropic shape and rigidity of the tetracatenar 1,10-phenanthroline ligand; no decoupling of the high coordination number metal fragment and mesogenic groups was required. Two of the complexes constitute new examples of rarely encountered lanthanidomesogens that show a nematic phase.
