The visualization of a reactor core cooled with liquid metal is very challenging. Normal cameras can’t be used as they can’t see through the opaque coolant. The visualization system has to withstand radiation and must work very reliable for long periods without maintenance. This paper presents a first study about the use of orthogonal codes in an ultrasonic visualization system. Through the use of orthogonal codes and a matched filter which calculates correlation in real time, multiple transducers can be implemented together. This technique has proven itself in other applications, but there is little research done with the focus on underwater use. This study shows that it is possible to detect the transmitted codes under water.
