Abstract

The accidents at the Chernobyl and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants have raised questions about the accmnulation of radionuclides in soils, the transfer in the food chain and the possibility of restricted land use in the foreseeable ftiture. The paper sunnnarizes what is generally m1derstood about the application of agricultural countermeasures as a land management option to reduce the transfer of rndiouuclides in the food chain and to facilitate the re tum of affected soils to agriculh.ual practices in the vicinity of the Fukushima Daiichi plant. It focuses on phyto-management approaches, evaluating their effectiveness and feasibility, considering radiological and technical criteria, and highlights the importance of considering societal aspects.
