We presented the mode of operation and the calibration results of miniature fibre optic radiation probes that offer new radiation monitoring opportunities for both nuclear-assisted surgical medicine and nuclear industry. For nuclear medical applications, we showed that the sensitivity of our fibre optic prototype was about ten times larger than a commercial graded probe. With an operational range between 1 mGy/h and 1Gy/h, we showed that our fibre optic radiation probe also has a huge potential for the nuclear industry in applications such as dose mapping in remote-handling applications during decommissioning activities or monitoring underground storage sites for leaks of radioactive materials.
