Abstract

Phosphogysums is a byproduct from production of inorganic P-fertilizer production. 226Ra is a constituent of phophogypsum. This study examines the transport of 226Ra through a typical soil from the Brazilian Cerrado used in agriculture when phosogypsum is applied. Reactive transport modeling with HP1 is used to assess the environmental risk associated with long time phosogypsum applications. An anylysis is done under different flow conditions (steady-state or transient). HP1 was used to evaluate the influence of Ca on the transport of Ra. For 27 years of application of phosphogypsum, radium remained almost entirely in the first 40 cm of soil with only very low concentrations in the soil water. Finally, it was observed that an increase in calcium concentration leads to an increase Ra concentration in the ground water.
